A Devon hillside in a picturesque triangle of land between Holsworthy, Okehampton and Hatherleigh is now home to a new vineyard that features mainly classic varieties of vine. In the valley below lies the village of Northlew, named after the nearby ancient manor of Lew, and featuring a 15th Century church. Its war memorial sadly records that 25% of all soldiers enlisting from the village in World War I, never returned.
The vineyard itself is at Lower Eastcott, 150 metres above sea level on a South-east facing slope, and with glimpses of Dartmoor. Two phases of planting have been completed, with over 5000 vines established and a third phase is scheduled for 2011. Eastcott range already includes still white and rosé wines with their first sparkling due for release in late 2010.
Directions:From Hatherleigh, take the A3072 westwards, turning off left towards Northlew (4 miles) on an unclassified road. Go through Gribbleford Bridge and up the hill, taking the right fork at the top. Lower Eastcott is about half a mile further on.From Okehampton, follow signs for Northlew and Bude. Cross the A386 and follow signs to Northlew. Just before that village, turn right up for hill towards Hatherleigh, and the vineyard is about a mile on, on the left. | |
