Planted by the descendant of Richard le Scrope, Lord Chancellor of England to Richard II, the 90 vines in the garden of Bolton Castle do not represent a serious attempt to push commercial vineyards ever northwards. They do however, represent a challenge to the vines, and are part of the replanting of a medieval garden at the castle. The vines are protected against the strong winds by a stone wall and , since their planting in 1996, have produced ' a few grapes'. More details are available on the Castle's own site at CAstle web site | |
