The Annual Wine Challenge |

2011 saw the Annual Wine Challenge go to WELCOMBE HILLS vineyard in Warwickshire where Jane Gallimore organised a splendid location and lunch for 80 assembled guests. The 111 wines from a record 32 vineyards had been judged on the Saturday, and 3 GOLD MEDALS had been awarded. After a morning entertained by a local Brass Band, and during which members judged the label competition and the Members' Choice, the awards were announced.
For the first time ever, the ATTINGHAM CUP for the best wine in show went to an amateur grower.STEVEN PLEASANCE from HARLESTONE in Northants won it for his 2009 ORION MEDIUM DRY wine.The Members Choice award went to WROXETER ROMAN VINEYARD, and David Millington took home the SOMERBY TROPHY (And a side of Smoked Salmon kindly donated by Bill Hobson). The new LABEL TROPHY, donated by previous winner GERARD WAINWRIGHT of HARGROVE ESTATE, went to DAVID LOFTHOUSE of THREE SISTERS at Market Rasen.
One of the final awards was the DAVID STANLEY innovations award for a system to assist in the propogation of vines. This was awarded to the most northerly member, ALAN SMITH of GLENKINDLE in Aberdeenshire who had traveled 450 miles to receive his trophy.

Gold, Silver, Bronze and Highly commended certificates are awarded. Those receiving
at least 13 points out of 20 may describe their wines as of being of Regional Standard,
one step up from Table Wine.
The Association has a large number of cups, which are awarded for specific types of wine or
regions. |
