Annual Competition

The annual Wine Challenge is held at a different location each year. In 2006, we were the guests of Frome Valley Vineyard in Herefordshire. In 2007, it took place amongst the antique clocks at Upton Hall in Nottinghamshire, home of the British Horological Institute.
The competition is judged by a panel of at least 6 judges, led by a Master of Wine.

The 2009 contest was at Eglantine Vineyard in Nottinghamshire, home of Tony and Veronica Skuriat, who were among the founders of the Association. Tony produces the International gold medal winning North Star, an English version if Eiswein. Despite the poor weather of 2008, there were a large number of entries and a distinguished judging panel, led, as before, by David Bird M.W.
Two days of glorious weather resulted in a record turnout of members to see Halfpenny Green Vineyard win the championship cup with their superb rose sparkling wine. Martin Millington of Wroxeter also gained a gold for his still Rose.
Four new vineyards competed, with Ryedale gaining both the cup for Dry white wine, and the Richardson cup for the best wine in Yorkshire. Rose Bank Vineyard gained silvers for their dry White and Rose wines, and Summer House from near Doncaster a bronze for their red.
Top winemakers were Lydia Underwood and Clive Vickers of Halfpenny Green in the commercial cass, and Roger Bull of Middlecave at Malton.

Gold, Silver, Bronze and Highly commended certificates are awarded. Those receiving at least 13 points out of 20 may describe their wines as of being of Regional Standard, one step up from Table Wine.
The Association has a large number of cups, which are awarded for specific types of wine or regions.
