Mercian Competition 2008

In a summer of alternating cool and wet, the competition day at Halfpenny Green Vineyard managed a fine bright and warm day. A minor flood along the B4176 represented the only access problem, as nearly 50 members attended a day at which 100 wines were laid out to be assessed.
The results mirrored those of the UKVA competition, with a succession of awards to Three Choirs Vineyard, and to their wine maker, Martin Fowke.These included the triumphs of Astley Vineyard, whose wines are made at Three Choirs.
In addition to the wine trophies, a new award was made for innovation. This was made by the guest speaker, Meryl Stanley in memory of the late David Stanley. This year it was awarded to Tony Skuriat of Eglantine, who has developed an inexpensive riddler for use in sparkling wine production.
